Exposed hogbacks in the Nevada desert One of the two rafts on the expedition. Neat craft. A collared lizard Jane and Burr LeChevet, Joe Lucier, and Dad at a lunchtime stop A view down the upper Colorado--the cliff on the right is supposedly the profile of an Indian brave Another beautiful day on the river Sure, we're in the backcountry, but that doesn't mean we can't have gigantic steaks on the beach Late afternoon sun in the canyon Later that same day from the same spot--it changes so much with the light. A sheer limestone cliff, with every layer of sediment clearly visible... amazing Vesey's Paradise, so named by the first explorer of the Grand Canyon, John Wesley Powell. A series of underground streams emerge from the wall of the canyon and feed a permanent crop of greenery that Powell thought his botanist friend Vesey would love. Approaching Redwall Cavern. It's much, much larger than it looks from the river. Redwall cavern from the inside. Those specks are people. An abandoned Anasazi granary up on the cliffs The view downriver from the same spot A panoramic view of the canyon from the same spot as the previous two photos Closeup of a barrel cactus The other guys Entering a rapid... looks so much less impressive in the photograph. Overlooking our camp at nightfall This would have been a good place for a quick dunk if the water wasn't falling at ten bazillion miles an hour - it was hard to even get close to the cascade due to the intense wind it generated. Elves' Chasm--a great place for a quiet swim Me, Dad, Joe, Burr, and Jane at camp Peter and Lel McInerny - one of the best parts of our trip A cactus flower Taking a shower Hiking partway up a side canyon A cave along Havasu Canyon Havasu Canyon Another cactus flower A still, drip-fed pool in a little side canyon
